The first U.S. Army general officer (1887–1942) to be killed in World War II when his plane crashed during the Battle of Midway. Tinker was the highest ranking Native-American officer (as a member of the Osage Nation), and the first to reach that rank. During World War II, he had been assigned as Commander of the Seventh Air Force in Hawaii to reorganize the air defenses. Vintage matte-finish 9.5 x 13.25 portrait photo of Clarence Tinker in profile wearing his military uniform, signed and inscribed in black ink, "To the McClaines, with recollections of many happy hours, C. L. Tinker, Lt. Col. U.S.” In fine condition.
