Clarence Darrow Inscribed Copy of Nietzsche
Clarence Darrow Inscribed Copy of Nietzsche the Thinker by William Mackintire Salter (New York: Henry Holt & Company, 1917), first edition, 539 pages, dark green cloth with gilt titles, 8vo (5.75" x 8.5"). Inscribed and signed "To Dora, who probably will not read & surely will not understand it - from her friend Clarence Darrow" on the front free endpaper. In 1924, Darrow defended accused murderers Leopold and Loeb, who were later convicted of the crime they committed just to see what it was like to take a human life. Darrow convinced his clients to plead guilty and won them life in prison instead of the death penalty. In their defense, Darrow argued that Leopold and Loeb were not completely responsible for their actions, but that their minds had been twisted by the Übermensch, or superman, ideal, learned in their study of the existential philosophy of Frederick Nietzsche. This book was signed by Darrow in the year that he used this defense in the trial of Leopold and Loeb. The book is in good condition, with moderate shelf wear, bumped corners, and a faded spine. The connection between Darrow, Nietzsche, and Leopold and Loeb, however, is irresistible for the book collector interested in historical association copies.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
