Clara E. Sipprell Signed Photograph Former Slave
Clara E. Sipprell Signed Photograph of a Former Slave: "Liverpool Hazard" (of the Butler Plantation) who was 108 years old when this moody, soft-focus B&W portrait was taken, as noted by Sipprell on the mount. Sipprell was born in Ontario in 1885 and began working in her brother's portrait studio as a teenager. She started out using a 4x5 view camera but soon switched to the larger 8x10 format. She became a prize-winning photographer putting on exhibits nationally, a real achievement for a woman of her day. Sipprell traveled the world and counted Albert Einstein, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Grandma Moses, and Pearl S. Buck among her subjects. Not just a portraitist, she also shot landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes. It was her technique to use only available light and to never retouch or enlarge the negative. This photo is likely a contact print, 9.5" x 7.5" in size. She has signed it in pencil on the mount. It is in fine condition with just a bit of waviness from its mounting to a 12.5" x 10" heavy sheet, which is matted in museum board to an overall size of 20" x 16".

Shipping: Flat Material, Large (view shipping information)
