American stage and screen actress (1880–1962) best known for her role as Aunt Em, the wife of Uncle Henry, in MGM's The Wizard of Oz. TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10, April 23, 1929. Letter to writer and actor John C. Brownell. In part: “Congratulations on the production of your play, which I hope you persuaded them not to call ‘The Nut Farm.’ ‘It’s The Climate’ is one of the best titles I ever heard. ‘Skidding’ closed last Thursday in San Francisco, and I hurried down here to divide my time between family and the ‘Talkies.’ I don’t expect to start rehearsing for two weeks yet, possibly more…I shall be so interested to hear reports of your play. It has taken some strength of mind to keep from regretting, since I looked forward to playing the part for so long. And I don’t suppose I will ever get away from the Helen Lowell shadow.” In fine condition. Brownell apparently failed to convince the producers of his desired title, as The Nut Farm was adapted for the screen in 1935.
