Clara Barton Autograph Letter Signed
Clara Barton Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5" x 8", Washington, D.C., January 23, 1868, to Senator William Fessenden of Maine. Clara Barton, the Civil War's "Angel of the Battlefield" is one of those rare historical figures above reproach. Her good works as a healer and organizer continued throughout her life. She was also active in the civil rights and suffrage movements of the late 19th century. The recipient of this letter was a strong anti-slavery Republican and a former Secretary of the Treasury under Lincoln. The letter reads: "Sir The enclosed letter from the father of my cherished friend Lucretia Walterhouse of Phil. reaches me today. I believe it fully explains itself, and will be readily comprehended by one whose strong ready arm has for so many months held this same poor weak suffering but noble and grateful girl, out of the depths of the grave, and the mental anguish worse than death. With my blessing for the past and my prayer for the future i beg to remain Very Respectfully". One small edge split along fold, else fine condition.
