lot of 6, including 3 ALsS and 3 ANsS from Clara Barton (1821-1912), teacher, nurse, and humanitarian who founded the American Red Cross in 1881.

3 ALsS as American Red Cross President, 1p (2) and 2pp (1), 8" x 10" (one folded in half), Washington, D.C., two letters with American Red Cross letterhead. January 17, 1882, April 4, 1883, and December 14, 1890. Addressed to E.P. Sheffield Esq., Auditor, New Hampton, Chickasaw County, Iowa. Two letters once accompanied checks from Barton for payment of taxes on land that she owned in Chickasaw County. In the second letter, Barton discusses the possibility of selling the land. In the third letter, Barton responds to Sheffield, telling him she would be glad to receive a check from him for $300.

Plus 3 ANsS as American Red Cross President. May 25, 1890, December 20, 1890, and January 2, 1893. Handwritten receipts for payments received from E.P. Sheffield for the sale of Barton's land in Iowa. 

Condition: Even toning to letters; typical folds; some tears along folds.
