This Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver was manufactured in 1867. This late Fourth Model Navy revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel and cylinder, case-hardened loading lever, frame and hammer, silver-plated brass back strap and trigger guard and one-piece ivory grip. The revolver has the Fourth Model large rounded brass trigger guard, thick loading lever catch, capping channel in the recoil shield cut-out, beveled loading cut-out in the barrel lug and bordered, underlined knurling of the hammer spur. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-". The left side of the frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" in two lines and "36 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT No". "ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843" is stamped in small letters along the forward edge of the cylinder. The full serial number "199459" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "9459" is stamped on the cylinder. The loading lever is correctly not serial numbered.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/case-hardened
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 199459
Condition: Very fine. The barrel has 70% original blue finish with high-point wear and some spotting on the left flat. The right side of the lug has some finish loss and minor scratch marks surrounding the wedge slot. The cylinder retains 30% of the blue finish and most of the cylinder scene visible. The cylinder pins are one-fourth intact and there is moderate flash pitting on the percussion nipples. The loading lever and frame have 90% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The hammer retains most of the casehardened finish with some flash pitting on the sides and face. The trigger guard and backstrap have close to 95% of the silver-plated finish. The ivory grip has an attrative mellow patina and is in very good condition There are three minor hair-line cracks on the right side of the grip and three small dents on the left side. The markings are crisp. The action is tight and functions well. This is an attractive example of a late production, post Civil War, Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver with ivory grips.
