Civil War era Merrill First Type percussion carbine, .54 cal., 22” barrel, brass mountings and patchbox, #2415 in overall fair to good condition showing a grey patina to metal surfaces that show evidence of an earlier cleaning; moderate pitting around firing area; replaced hammer, good action, good markings on lockplate, rough bore, stock is overall good with old crack on both sides of the wrist at the top tang and a small spot repair with wood putty at the end of the tang; some scattered mars and scratches to wood from storage; front barrel band screw and rear trigger guard screw are old replacements; a relatively hard-to-find example of this type of Civil War carbine in any condition as less than 15,000 total were manufactured between First and Second types; this one has the initials NJ stamped on the left side of the breech possibly indicating New Jersey Cavalry use as per Flayderman’s Guide, the 11th, 17th and 18th Cav. Regiments of New Jersey were known to have been issued Merrills. From an old estate. Est.: $800-$1,600.
