This was part of a contract of 10,000 rifles manufactured by Whitney for the U.S. Navy between 1861 and 1864. Blade front sight and long range adjustable (up to 1,000 yards) ladder rear sight. The barrel tang is stamped with the serial number "3294" and the left side of the barrel is stamped "W". The barrel is held on by a single barrel band and an end cap. The barrel band is marked with a "U" on the right side, full length steel ramrod with tulip shaped end. The lock is marked "U.S./ WHITNEY-VILLE" below the bolster and dated "1863" vertically behind the hammer. The eagle-shield surmounting flags and trophies are marked just right of the hammer. One piece full length plain straight grip stock with iron military buttplate and sling swivels mounted below the buttstock and on rear barrel band. The tang of the buttplate is marked "U.S.", the left side of the stock opposite of the lock plate features a cartouche. With a Collins sword bayonet and scabbard. The bayonet is dated "1862" and carries the number "736" on top of grip.

Very good. The rifle has a bright appearance with some speckling of patina. The heavily sanded and reoiled stock is fair with a few pressure dents and some scattered very minor handling marks. Mechanically fine. The bayonet has bright metal surfaces and the scabbard shows some minor handling marks.
