<B>Civil War Union Printed "General Orders," a Collection of Ten Different</B></I> <BR><BR>Ten pieces, 9 that are 5" x 7.25" and one (Naval) 5" x 8", generally excellent condition, except the Army ones have two small punch holes in left borders from insertion into an original binder. Dated 1863 - 64, except for the Naval piece, which is 1885 (post-war). Includes:<BR><BR> <B>1) General Order No. 6:</B></I> reports on sentence of death for a private who<I> "by threats and boisterous language (did) create a sedition [sic] in the camp…"</B></I><BR><BR> <B>2) Mustering Service circular No.6.</B></I> Multi-page, listing changes in officer assignments throughout the Army, November 1, 1863.<BR><BR> <B>3) General Order No. 134.</B></I> A report on a trial of a lieutenant for <I> "conduct to the prejadice [sic] of good order and military discipline."</B></I> Sentence: dismissal from service (considering the life expectancy of the average Civil War lieutenant, perhaps an enviable fate!)<BR><BR> <B>4) General Order No. 148.</B></I> Similar, but penitentiary sentence.<BR><BR> <B>5) General Order No. 173.</B></I> Deals with incitement to mutiny. Sentenced to penitentiary.<BR><BR> <B>6) General Order No. 185.</B></I> This soldier was found asleep at his duty-post. Sentence: Death by firing squad (!).<BR><BR> <B>7) General Order No. 188.</B></I> A colonel did<I> "behave himself with contempt and disrespect toward his superior officer."</B></I> Sentence: dismissal from service. <BR><BR> <B>8) General Order No. 242.</B></I> <I> "Relating to the amnesty of Insurgent Enemies."</B></I> Warns of fraudulent attempts to take a false loyalty oath.<BR><BR> <B>9) General Order No. 299.</B></I> Designates ranking officers among prisoners of war to supervise distribution of clothing and other foods to prisoners.<BR><BR> Provides a fascinating look into the internal workings of the Union military during the Civil War.<BR><BR> Also, an 1885 Naval Circular No. 42 outlining protocol for disbursement of funds.<BR><BR> Also included in the lot is a rough copy of the 1880 paperback volume, <I>An Alphabetical List of the Battles of the War of the Rebellion,</B></I> published by J. H. Soule, Washington, 1880.
