Gutekunst of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. * tear to the top left of the photo, as seen in photos. written in pencil on the back, "S.W. Crawford Fort Sumter" Samuel W. Crawford (1829-1892) was the surgeon on duty at Ft. Sumter during the Confederate bombardment, after which he changed careers and accepted a commission as a major in the 13th U. S. Infantry. Promoted to brigadier general on April 25, 1862, Crawford commanded a brigade, seeing action at Cedar Mountain and Antietam, where he was severely wounded. Unable to return until May 1863, he was given command of the Pennsylvania Reserves Division. Crawford and his division, part of the V Army Corps, arrived at Gettysburg on July 2 and were engaged on the slopes of Little Round Top. Crawford remained in command of the Pennsylvania Reserves for the rest of the war and was brevetted major general on August 1, 1864. Â
