Civil War U.S. Springfield Model 1863 Percussion Rifle-Musket, Type I, NVSN, .58 cal., 40" round barrel is missing sights and breech markings, and has a replacement nipple bolster; beveled lockplate is marked "(spread-wing eagle)" to left of "U.S./Springfield" below bolster, "1863" behind hammer; steel furniture includes trigger guard with sling loop at front, curved buttplate marked "US" at top screw, two round lock screw escutcheons, three clamping bands (middle with sling loop), nosecap and tulip-tip ramrod. Fullstock of oil-stained walnut has raised aprons at either side of lock. Mfg'd ca. 1863. Condition is good, the metal being gunmetal gray with scattered light-to-medium erosion and heavy pitting in lock area of barrel; front sight filed to a small profile. Stock is sound showing the expected dings and shallow gouges of age and long military use, has a 3.5" section of replaced wood below the lower band and occasional losses along the ramrod channel. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows moderate-to-heavy black-powder erosion. Est.: $700-$900. (Antique)
