Civil War U.S. Springfield Model 1863 Percussion Rifle-Musket, Type II, Altered Post-War to Smoothbore Fowler, NVSN, 16 bore, 33" round barrel with reduced shotgun-style front sight, vacant rear dovetail, "V/P/(eagle head)" at left breech; beveled lockplate has "(spread-wing eagle)" left of "U.S./Springfield" below nipple bolster and "1864" at rear; steel fittings include 2-pc. trigger guard with sling loop at front, curved buttplate marked "US" at top screw, two spring-retained bands (top with sling loop). Fullstock of oil-stained walnut has raised panels at either side of lock, steel tulip-tip ramrod. Mfg'd ca. 1864. Condition is about good as altered, the steel being mostly smooth dark-brown with erosion in area of the period-replaced barrel bolster, silvered case colors. Stock is sound with the expected nicks and dings of age and use, has had the forend reduced, bright lower band is a likely modern replacement. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows general moderate erosion. Est.: $300-$500. (Antique)
