This is an example of a Second Model (also known as the "Model 1863"), Maynard carbine that was manufactured circa 1860 to 1865, with approximately 20,000 total production. Among the Union cavalry regiments armed with these Maynards were the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. The three line "MASS. ARMS CO." address is marked on the right front of the frame and four line "1851/1856" Maynard patent marking on the left side. Left barrel flat has "A.J.N." inspector marking and an "S" on the saddle ring base. Equipped with pinched front and a three leaf folding rear sights. Saddle ring bar with ring mounted on the left side of the receiver. Smooth straight grip stock with two clear boxed "AJN" and "JM" cartouches on the left side of the wrist and fitted with a crescent buttplate.

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 70% thinned original blue finish. The receiver and lever retain 30% original case colors. The stock is also very fine with some minor handling marks. The cartouches are crisp. Mechanically fine.
