Civil War Treasury Secy Hugh McCulloch ALS
Civil War Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCulloch Autograph letter Signed, “H McCulloch”, two pages on Treasury Department letterhead, 7.75” x 10”, Washington, D.C., July 31, 1865, to Samuel Fessenden, Portland, Maine and docketed by the recipient. This letter, headed “Private”, is written to the preceding Secretary of the Treasury and candidly discusses Senator John Conness of California. McCulloch writes in part: “…I am apprehensive that too much power has been given to Mr. Conness…My present impression is that he is a dirty dog.” Smoothed folds, very fine condition. Despite McCulloch's disdain, Conness had been a favorite of Abraham Lincoln's and, indeed, was a pallbearer for the slain president.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
