Civil War Spencer Repeating Sporting Rifle with Period Tack Decoration
Manufactured between 1863 and 1865, the Spencer was one of the most popular firearms used by the Union forces in the Civil War. At the same time, the company also produced some sporting rifles. It features a globe front sight, an adjustable rear sight graduated to 800 yards and a long range tang mounted peep sight. This particular rifle falls into the correct serial number range of 11,000 to 61,000 of the Civil War Era Spencers. The top of the receiver is marked "SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS. / PAT'D. MARCH 6. 1860", with the serial number on the upper tang, (partially obliterated by the screw hole), and on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm. Smooth forearm secured by two screws and straight grip stock with an iron carbine buttplate and 14 period applied small brass tacks on the top of the wrist.

Serial Number: 58469
Condition: Very good. The barrel has a smooth mottled brown patina with 20% original blue finish remaining, mostly in the protected areas around the forearm. The receiver, lock, hammer and lever have a smooth mottled silver gray patina. The highly figured wood is also very good. The grain is different between the stock and forearm and there are overall scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. Most of the receiver marking is clear. Mechanically excellent. A colorful Old West Spencer sporting rifle!
