Manufactured from 1863-1865 with a total production of about 50,000, the Spencer was one of the most widely used and popular Civil War firearms. Fixed blade front sight and folding rear sight graduated to 800 yards. Combination trigger guard and lever operates the unique Spencer action, extracting the spent casing on the down stroke and chambering a fresh round from the tube magazine in the buttstock on the upstroke. The top of the receiver is marked "SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS. / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860" and the serial number is marked on the rear of the receiver. The left rear flat of the barrel is marked "JL" and the top ahead of the rear sight is stamped "PM". The barrel was finished blue with casehardened remaining parts, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left wrist and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a sling swivel. The stock is absent of any cartouches.
BBL: 20 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 50 RF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 12309
Condition: Very fine as Arsenal refurbished. The barrel retains 90% original blue finish with scattered flaking and minor spotting. The remaining surfaces retain at least 95% original case colors, except for the buttplate which shows 70% fading case colors. The wood has been varnished, and with the exception of two cracks (one extending almost the entire length) on the left side of the stock, the buttstock is good with scattered dents, dings and scratches. The forearm is a crude period custom made example with out front band. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
