The Spencer was one of the most widely used and popular Civil War firearms. This particular rifle is the "Army Model" with the front sight base doubling as a bayonet lug for a socket bayonet. Fixed blade front sight and folding notch/aperture rear sight graduated to 800 yards. Combination trigger guard and lever operates the unique Spencer action, extracting the spent casing on the down stroke and chambering a fresh round from the tube magazine in the buttstock on the upstroke. The top of the receiver is marked "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS./PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860" and the serial number is marked on the top of the receiver next to the hammer. Mounted with a full length smooth walnut forearm with three barrel bands and straight stock with steel buttplate and sling swivel. Complete with an unmarked angular bayonet.

Condition:
Very good plus. The barrel has a crisp smooth brown patina with a smooth dark mottled patina on the balance of the metal surfaces. The wood is fine with a number of small gouges, moderate dents, a chip absent from the upper left rear of the forearm and a few minor dings and scratches on the stock. The markings are clear. The action is fine. The fine bayonet is bright with some scattered minor discoloration. This historic Civil War Spencer Rifle is well above average.
