Civil War Soldier Letter With Bull Run Content
Civil War Soldier Letter With Bull Run Content. Seven pages, 5” x 8”, on paper with a patriotic color vignette, “Camp Near Warrenton, Fauquier County”, July 15, 1862, to “Cousin Hannah”. Joseph M. Bonsall, a soldier in Company K, 90th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers writes to his cousin about a week before the First Battle of Bull Run from a camp near Warrenton Junction. He describes the company's transport via rail from Front Royal “…which was a good deal better than marching but when I say riding in the cars you must not think I mean cars with cushioned seats but we generally ride in baggage cars with about fifty in a car and no seats and you get shook nearly to pieces it is a good deal like hauling cattle.” He goes on to describe how his company has moved to take forward positions and includes detail about foraging for food and general camp life. He mentions that the crops in the area are in need of harvesting and writes “Stonewall Jackson says he is coming to get the crops in the valley well if he can get them he is welcome to them, but I think there will be a muss first.” Bonsall mentions several of his Pennsylvania friends from back home that are on the missing list. A great letter that sets the tone of camp life in the immediate time before the great first battle at Bull Run. With the usual fold creases, else very good. Ex. Henry E.
