Civil War Snare Drum, by Sempf & Ottes, New York. By tradition, this drum was carried thru the Civil War by the father of Capt. Harry Bryant, 23rd Regiment, Brooklyn. It was later presented to 1st Sgt. Bert Thompson, 71st Regiment, Veteran's Field Music, and then later used in several theatrical productions, George M. Cohan's ''Little Millionaire'', 1912-1913, and ending up in a production of ''Present Arms'' in 1928. Drum is 16'' dia., 12-1/2'' high; the manufacturer was located at 209 & 211 Grand St., New York, and produced bass and snare drums. Mfg'rs tag is clearly seen thru a circular bone vent hole with ten-pointed inlaid star on walnut veneer body. Top and bottom hoop rings with stenciled vine and floral patterns. Condition is about fine with some wear to center of top drum head, a loss to one of the pull tabs which is present, and a small 2'' indentation/separation to drum body. Snare assembly with one detached string that detracts little to sound or overall condition. With correct period drum sticks. Est.: $800-$1,200.
