This is an example of one of the Model 1862 Sharps & Hankins carbines purchased by the U.S. Navy between 1862-1865. The carbine features the unique leather barrel cover to protect the blue barrel from rust. The leather is secured by two screws at the breech. The frame is casehardened with the floating firing pin mounted in the recoil shield. The barrel has a brass blade front sight and a tangent rear sight. The right side of the receiver is marked "SHARPS/&/HANKINS/PHILDA" and the left side is marked "SHARPS/PATENT/1859". The matching serial number is located on the upper tang, lever bar and underside of the barrel. Smooth straight grip stock with sling swivel and brass buttplate.

Condition: Fine. The receiver and lever retain 50% original case colors. The barrel retains most of the leather which has heavy flaking and a couple tears around the underside of the receiver. The wood is fine with some minor handling marks and a small chip missing near the tang. Mechanically excellent.
