Civil War Production Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver

Commercial production Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver manufactured in 1863. This revolver has the Middle Fourth Model features which include: (1) large rounded trigger guard, (2) smaller recoil shield capping cut-out with capping channel and (3) thin contour loading lever catch. The barrel has a brass cone front sight and the hammer spur has border-less knurling. The barrel and cylinder have the Colt high polish commercial blue finish. The loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened and the brass trigger guard and back strap are silver plated. The one-piece walnut grip has a high polish piano finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the one-line legend "- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-". The left side of the frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" in two lines and "36 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT". The full serial number, "146891" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "6891" is stamped on the loading lever and cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Very fine. The revolver retains 85% of the original blue, casehardened and silver-plated finish and presents an outstanding appearance. The barrel has 80% of the high polish blue finish with some flaking on the sides of the lug and light wear on the barrel edges. The right side of the barrel lug has the usual scratches and dents around the wedge slot. The cylinder retains all of the Texas Navy scene and about 80% of the blue finish. The cylinder has some flaking in the finish above one chamber but retains most of the blue finish. The cylinder safety pins are battered but intact and the percussion nipples have light-moderate flash pitting. The loading lever, frame and hammer retain more than 90% of the color casehardened finish with vivid case colors. The only significant wear is traces of flash pitting on the sides of the hammer. The trigger guard and back strap have about 10% of the delicate silver plated finish intact. The exposed brass has an attractive unpolished patina. The frame and lever screws retain about 80% of the fire blue finish. The walnut grip is in excellent condition and retains nearly all of the high polish piano finish. Wear is limited to several shallow dents in the edge of the right heel and what appear to be partially carved initials on the right side of the butt. This is a good looking example of a Civil War, commercial production, Colt Fourth Model 1851 Navy revolver. It is difficult to find Colt percussion revolvers with this much original finish.
