The cover has been annotated on the recto by a “<I>Wm F. Cornell</B></I>” with an observation, written at some point shortly after the Civil War as follows: “<I>Pulse of the South! In my Southern travels, I talked with 100 patriots of the “lost cause”. The names of Robert E. Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson were the most revered! President Davis was not popular and many said, had he listened to Alexander H.
