The cover has been annotated on the recto by a “<I>Wm F. Cornell</B></I>” with an observation, written at some point shortly after the Civil War as follows: “<I>Pulse of the South! In my Southern travels, I talked with 100 patriots of the “lost cause”. The names of Robert E. Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson were the most revered!
