a scarce political cartoon entitled General Scott. The Hercules of the Union, Slaying the Great Dragon of Secession., Currier & Ives, 1861, 10.75" x 14.75", framed, 14.25" x 18.25". The lithograph shows General Scott holding a club labeled Liberty & Union in the face of a Confederate serpent, labeled Secession, with seven heads of various Confederate leaders, labeled with the following names and sinful acts: Robert Toombs, Hatred and Blasphemy; Alexander Stephens, Lying; Jefferson Davis, Piracy; P.G.T. Beauregard, Perjury; David E. Twiggs, Treason; Francis W. Pickens, Extortion; and John B. Floyd, Robbery. The seven heads are representative of the seven original Southern states that seceded from the Union. Although this cartoon depicts Scott striking a strong blow against the Confederacy, in reality, he was actually in favor of a more passive policy of constricting the Southern states. Nevertheless, this cartoon demonstrates the general public's belief that the war would be a short one.

Condition: Light, even toning; scattered soiling; some small chips in frame.
