Pair of color lithograph paintings. Both depict famous battles of the Civil War. The first is titled Battle of the Wilderness, Desperate Fight on the Orange C.H. Plank Road, near Todd`s Tavern, May 6th, 1864. The print at the base reads Copyrighted 1887 by Kurtz Allison, Art Publishers, 76 78 Wabash Ave Chicago USA. The scene is a terrible fight in a densely forested wood, Union forces charging the Confederates, with carnage and gun smoke everywhere. The second is The Battle of Gettysburg, Decisive Conflict July Third, 4P.M. 1863. The lithographers are the same as above. This scene is a much broader scope, indicating large masses of troops for both sides, flags flying, fighting face-to-face at the center, explosions and death all around. This may depict the famous Pickett`s Charge, or the South`s High Water Mark for penetration into the North. Gettysburg recorded the highest casualties of the war, between 46,000 and 51,000 deaths for both sides. Both framed pieces measure 30x24. The mats show some age and minor staining at the edges, but colors are rich and vibrant, and the scenes are taunt with action. Historical works. HKA#63702
