This lot contains a Civil war medical brass mechanical bleeder. A bleeder was used for the act of Bloodletting which is the withdrawal of blood from a patient to cure or prevent illness and disease. Bloodletting was based on an ancient system of medicine in which blood and other bodily fluids were regarded as "humors" that had to remain in proper balance to maintain health. It is claimed to have been the most common medical practice performed by surgeons from antiquity until the late 19th century, a span of almost 2,000 years. It is in good condition for its age, it has a strong spring and crisp trigger, it all seems to be in working order. This is a interesting and highly collectible piece of American and medical history that are not commonly seen. It measures 1 3/4" L x 1 1/2" W x 2 9/16" T
