Civil War Miller & Co., Presentation Officer's Cavalry Saber
Rare Miller & Co., presentation cavalry officer's saber with Collins & Co., blade. The upper scabbard mount has an integral, oval, plate inscribed: "COL. NELSON WALL. / - From Officers of - / the 4th R.I.M.". The saber has a 34-inch, transition 1840-1860 style blade with flat back and single stopped fuller made by Collins & Co. The reverse ricasso is stamped with "COLLINS & CO." in a half circle above "HARTFORD/CONN./1862" in three lines. The retailer's name and address: "Miller / & Co. / New York" is etched in a shield above the Collins address. The blade features extremely fine acid and dry needle-point etching. The obverse features a very detailed dry-etch engraving of an officer with forage cap, field glasses and saber and a stand of military trophies. The officer and stand of trophies are surrounded by acid-etched, dry needle engraved vine and foliate designs. The reverse of the blade is decorated with a highly detailed eagle perched on the Miller & Co., shield and "U.S." in the center of the blade. The remainder of the 19-inched panel is decorated with acid-etched vine and foliate designs highlight with dry needle engraving. The blade decoration is similar to the on the Miller & Co. cavalry officer' s saber with Collins blade described on pages 285-287 of "Civil War Cavalry and Artillery Sabers" by John H. Thillmann. The saber has a brass hilt and cast brass grip. The guard branches, Phrygian helmet style pommel cap and counterguard are chased in foliate and geometric designs. The grip has cast scales and is wrapped with a single strand of twisted brass wire. The scabbard has a nickel-plated body with gold-plated, pierced, relief, brass drag, suspension bands and throat.

Very fine. The blade has been cleaned and has scattered pitting from the tip to the beginning of the engraved panels. The engraving remains crisp. The brass hilt has been polished and is in fine condition with aged patina. The engraving and casting on the hilt and grip is crisp. The scabbard is in very fine to excellent condition. The body has all of the plated finish and is free from dents. The pierced brass drag, suspension bands and throat have most of the original gold-plated finish. The engraved presentation is crisp and clear. This a very fine example of a rare Miller & Co., cavalry officer's saber with exceptional engraving on the Collin's & Co., blade.
