Civil War Merrill Breechloading Percussion Carbine, 1st Type, #8504, .54 cal., 22.1" round barrel with standard sights is unmarked; receiver has 8.25" rear-hinged breech-lever marked "J.M. Merrill Balto./Pat. July 1858" with articulated plunger to seat combustible cartridge in chamber, nipple bolster with cleanout screw; beveled lockplate has Merrill marking + "Apl. 9 May 21-26-61" below, serial number at rear. Brass trigger guard, 4.375" patch box, buttplate, screw-retained band. Oil-finished walnut halfstock has left-side "SWP" cartouche of Inspector Samuel W. Porter, splinter-type forend, 5.25" sling bar/brass ring at left. Condition is very good showing gray gunmetal with scattered oxidation (knackering at upper tang, breech lever hinge area), good edges and markings, toned brass. Stock shows age and use marks, shallow 1.75" gouge at bottom of forend, 1.25" crack above sling bar. Action is crisp, breech hinge is secure, bore shows scattered light roughness, fine rifling.
