Civil War Merrill Breech Loading Carbine
Manufactured by H. Merrill of Baltimore, Maryland with a total production of about 14,500. This is a single shot breech loading carbine, loaded by lifting up and pulling back on the breech lever. The lock is marked with the serial number behind the hammer and "J.H. MERRILL BALTO / PAT. JULY 1858 / APL. 9 MAY 21-26-61" in front of the hammer. The top of the breech lever is marked "J.H. MERRILL BALTO / PAT. JULY 1858" opposite the bolster and "3903" at the rear. Bland front sight, two leaf folding rear sight, single brass barrel band, bright barrel with casehardened breech, lock and breech lever, and mounted with a one piece smooth straight grip stock with sharply tapered forend, saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left side stock flat, brass patch box and iron carbine buttplate. Merrill carbines were issued to Union cavalry regiments in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Indiana, Wisconsin and Kentucky.

Condition: Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray and brown patina. The patch box and buttplate have a grayish aged patina. The stock has been refinished and remains good almost all of the finish remaining, a minor repaired crack is present through the wrist and a few scattered minor dings and dents. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
