Civil War Merrill Breech-Loading Carbine
This Second Type carbine has the First Type lock plate marked with the serial number vertically at the rear and "J.H. MERRILL BALTO / PAT. JULY 1858. / APRL. 9. MAY 21-28-61" marked below the bolster (no eagle). The Merrill patent marking is stamped on top of the breech latch along with the serial number. Fitted with a two leaf (middle leaf is absent) rear sight that serves as the breech lever latch. A saddle ring bar with ring is mounted on the left stock flat. The carbine has the Second Type stock manufactured without a patch box, but has the First Type forend tip that has a sharply tapered contour.

Good. The carbine has a mixed gray patina with some minor pitting (mostly on the barrel near the breech). The brass has an aged patina. The wood is good with "RT" period carved on the right side of buttstock, a minor crack near the upper tang, and some minor dings and gouges, along with some moderate pressure dents. Mechanically fine.
