[Civil War Material]
A fascinating group of material relating to Cornelius H. Brown of Rawdon, Canada East, volunteer in the 12th Wisconsin Battery at Vicksburg 1862-1865. The group of documents include a volunteer list of Pay and Clothing dated June 30th, 1862; a call to Special Service to the 12th Wisconcin Battery signed at Vicksburg June 30th, 1863; a note from the 3rd Division 15th Corps Guards dated Nov. 23rd, 1864; a call to Special Services dated at Cartersville, Atlanta 1864; discharge papers at North Carolina dated May 1st, 1865; a marriage certificate 1871; pension vouchers January 15th and March 1889; a lease dated at Kansas City Missouri June 1898; last Will and Testament dated July 18th, 1889. Included are two small diaries written by Brown in pencil from the time of his enlistment in August 1862 to 1867. The first diary chronicles daily life as a volunteer in short entries. Troop movements and significant events such as the Battle of Corinth (October 3rd & 4th, 1862) are detailed "The rebels were shelling the town and our siege guns were replying. As soon as it was light our infantry engaged the enemy about a mile in front of us and kept retreating a mile and a half past. Ten a.m when [?] rebels entered the town fighting desperately...". The second diary contains daily civilian life after Brown's discharge. An interesting group of civil war material, sold waf. Should be seen.
