Civil War Manhattan Series III Navy Percussion Revolver, #22742, .36 cal., blued 6.5'' octagonal barrel, with a German-silver blade front sight marked ''Manhattan Fire Arms Co., Newark, N.J.'' in one line on top flat; blued 5-shot round cylinder is rolled with five military panel scenes, and marked ''Patented Dec. 27, 1859'' on its rear periphery; case hardened frame and hammer; silver-plated brass gripstraps; one-piece varnished walnut grips. Mfg'd ca. 1859-68. Condition is very good. Steel parts show a smooth gunmetal patina with good traces of barrel blue and case hardening colors to frame, lever and hammer; cylinder scene is light (probably rolled that way) but mostly visible; 95% original silver remains on the triggerguard, and perhaps 10% on backstrap (mainly to top apron area). Grips retain 85% original varnish with highpoint wear and the expected marks of age and use. All visible serial numbers match; markings are clear; action is smooth and sure; bore is brilliant with deep rifling. Close cousins to the Colt Model 1851 Navy and 1849 Pocket revolvers, these Manhattan Navys enjoyed much success among officers and men during the Civil War years; examples with 6.5'' barrels are especially desirable. Est.: $600-$800. (Antique)
