Civil War Maker-Marked Powder Flask c.1860s
Featured in this lot is a maker-marked Civil War flask. It is made of copper/brass and was made by “The American Flask and Cap Co.” with their name engraved near the spout. They started their business in New York City in 1857 and continued throughout the Civil War. Because of the increased demand, factories like the one owned by the American Flask & Cap Co. mass produced thousands of powder flasks for hunters and the military. Usually hunter examples had ornate designs, while the military preferred plain flasks, such as this one. The flask is in good condition with a very small hole on one side of the flask and small dents that show its use throughout its lifetime. The spout offers four different quantities for your powder ranging from three to four grams of powder. The powder flask measures 4 1/2" W at the base, 1 1/2" W at the top, and 9 3/4" L.
