Civil War Major General Oliver O. Howard Signed Photo. A handsome 3" x 6" photo of Howard in uniform taken by Burlington, Vermont photographer Miss Doty, and signed boldly on the back of the mount "With kindest regards. Oliver Otis Howard Major Gen. &c. (Retired) May 12th 190s Burlington Vermont". Howard lost his right arm at Fair Oaks in 1862, suffered some major setbacks at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and finished the war in Tennessee, leading the right wing of Sherman's famous March to the Sea. After the Civil War he fought in the Indian Wars, and retired from the army in 1894. He was known for promoting the welfare and education of slaves and freedmen, and founding Howard University in 1866. He also founded Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee in 1895. Very fine condition with only the lightest bit of soiling on the mount.
