Civilian autograph letter signed and datelined ''Westfield Nov 14th 1862'' Letter reads in part ''…We were quite surprised to hear you had enlisted. Our folks went to Brandford…and just called at your fathers house the same day you left, by our folks I mean Charles, Willys and their father. Benjm is in the Hospital in West Philadelphia where he has been since the 27th of Sept, as you may know he was on the field Wednesday the 17th of Sept and received a bullet wound in his right arm a little below the elbow, breaking and fracturing both bones, he did not arrive at Hospital untill 10 days after the wound was recieved, last week, his arm was opened on the front side and 8 or 9 of the pieces of bone taken out. he manages to write quite inteligabley with his left hand, 3 weeks ago I went to see him found him having good care and having good food, though he has not been out of Hospital since he first went there, when he received the wound he had not been in the engagement over 30 or 40 min. I presume you have heard how terribly the 14th and 16th Reg were cut up the 16th the worst…how do you like soldier life?…is it what you expected?…how do you like your Chaplain? Your Col is also from Meriden, we see his wife frequently. Do you have singing and Prayer meetings? I think these have a good influence on a soldiers life…I am glad to write to any of the soldiers who would like to have me for I wish to cheer them all I can…Yours with good wishes Lucy Ann Wilcox''.
