Civil War Letter Regarding the New York Riots. [Union] Civilian Letter on Morgan's Ohio Raid.
[Union] Civilian Letter on Morgan's Ohio Raid. Autograph Letter Signed, in the hand of one Charlie, 5" by 7", 4 pages, recto and verso, no place [Ohio], July 12, 1863. To Charlie's girlfriend. In Fine condition. Confederate Raider John Hunt Morgan's Ohio Raid was remarkable, says Boatner, for the endurance exhibited by Morgan's command: an average of 21 hours a day in the saddle from the time he crossed the Ohio. However, the raid was pointless; he lost badly; and it marked the end of his usefulness to the Army of Tennessee. Still, as Charlie reflects, the raid upset, and terrified, Ohio for weeks. "...I have just come from town. The excitement still continues. One meets a guard about every square. I have very nearly worn my pocket book out, showing my pass. Last night I had to show it three times on one square. There are no business houses open and all kinds of trade is suspended. We have received no mail since Friday, and none leaves the city. I hope it will not last much longer... If Morgan comes up your way I hope they will capture him. I heard he was on his way in that direction..." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
