Civil War Joslyn Model 1862 Breech Loading Carbine

This is an example of a scarce transitional Model 1862 carbine with the Model 1864 type breech/pull-out knob latch found only on carbines in the 2400-3600 serial number range. Approximately 3,500 Model 1862 carbines were made, 2,200 of which the U.S. Government purchased. The top of the breechblock is marked with the three line Joslyn patent markings with 1861 and 1862 patent dates and the serial number "3264". The lock plate is marked with the two line address. Ordnance sub-inspector initials "F.D.L." are stamped on the left side rear of the barrel. Pinched blade front and folding three leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards. Mounted with a one-piece walnut half stock, with a boxed script "FDL" ordnance cartouche on the left stock flat above the sling bar. The buttplate tang is marked with a small "L" and a small "F.D.L." is stamped on the comb directly ahead of the tang.

Very good. The barrel has a brown patina with some minor spotting. The hammer has a smooth dark mottled patina and the remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina. The brass barrel, trigger guard and buttplate have an aged patina. The stock remains very good with light, but visible cartouche, some scattered minor dents, nicks and scratches. The breechblock markings are faint and the lock markings are clear. The action is fine.
