This is a very nice example of a Transitional Model 1862 carbine with the Model 1864 type breech/pull-out knob latch found only on carbines in the 2400-3600 serial number range. Approximately 3,500 Model 1862 carbines were made, 2,200 of which the U.S. Government purchased. The top of the breechblock is marked with the three line Joslyn patent markings with 1861 and 1862 patent dates. The lock plate is marked "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS Co/STONINGTON/CONN." ahead of the hammer. The matching serial number is marked on top of the breechblock and on the upper tang. Ordnance sub-inspector initials "F.D.L." are stamped on the left side of the barrel. Blue barrel, casehardened remaining metal surfaces and brass mountings. The barrel is equipped with a pinched blade front and folding three leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards. Mounted with a one piece walnut half stock, with two crisp boxed script "FDL" ordnance cartouches on the left stock flat above the sling bar. The buttplate tang is marked with a small "L" and a small "F.D.L." is stamped on the comb directly ahead of the tang. Joslyn carbines were widely issued to Union cavalry units during the Civil War, including the 4th and 8th Indiana, 19th New York, 13th Tennessee, 1st Nebraska, and 2nd Wisconsin.
BBL: 22 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 52 RF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 3005
Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 60% original blue finish with some minor thinning, and spotting on the bottom of the forward portion and top of the breech end. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth brownish gray patina with some of the faded original case colors in protected areas and some of the original casehardening pattern on the lock and hammer. The brass components have pleasant natural aged mustard patina. The stock is fine with scattered minor pressure dents and scratches. As noted above, the cartouches are crisp. The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent. A very nice Transitional Model 1862 Joslyn Civil War carbine.
