1) Non-regulation pattern W. Clauberg (Solingen) 1850 Staff and Field Officer's Sword. The two-branch cast brass, guard lacks the "U.S." between the branches. The sword and scabbard are regulation in other respects. The grip has a fish-skin cover wrapped with two strands of wire. The 32-inch blade is etched "IRON PROOF" on the back and "JAMES P. FITCH/NEW YORK" on the obverse ricasso. The obverse of the blade is acid-etched with a spread Eagle/Shield with sunbursts in a frosted panel. The reverse of the blade is etched with a fancy "U.S." surrounded by scroll-work in a frosted panel. The sword has a regulation, brass bands and drag. 2) The cavalry saber is nearly identical to a British Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Saber with 28- inch, curved blade, D-shaped steel knuckle bow, down-turned quillion and leather wrapped grip. The saber has an iron scabard with two suspension rings. The blade, guard and scabbard are un-marked.

1) The blade is excellent with very little wear and outstanding etching. The hilt has an attractive un-polished patina. The grip and wire wrap are completely intact and in excellent condition. The leather scabbard body is dry with surface flaking. The brass mountings have a good-looking age patina with some minor age discoloration. 2) The Pattern 1796 Saber is in very good condition. The blade has most of the original polish. Wear is limited to several minor nicks in the edge. The grip has about 75% of the leather wrap. The scabbard shows some minor age discoloration.
