Civil War Iron Brigade Soldier 1/4 Plate Tintype
Civil War "Iron Brigade" Soldier 1/4 Plate Tintype in a Union Case. Shown in this photo is a soldier in dress uniform posed in front of an Indian teepee painted backdrop. He is holding a long rifle with a bayonet and has what appears to be a tomahawk in his belt. He is wearing a black Hardee style hat with an emblem that looks to be from Battery B of the 4th U.S. Artillery. The photo is matted into a brass shell mat (no glass) and set into a decorative thermoplastic case made by Littlefield, Parsons & Co. (Krainik 58). There are some creases and dents to the photo but the image has great detail and fine tonal range.

This battery was attached to and often considered part of the Iron Brigade (a name coined reportedly when General McClellan said of them, "They must be made of iron."). This infantry brigade consisted of mostly western troops from Wisconsin, but also regiments from Michigan and Indiana and is commonly known as the Civil War's best fighting brigade. They served bravely at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and were present for Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. The Iron Brigade suffered more casualties (proportionately) than any other brigade in the Civil War. This is a great item with appeal to photography and Civil War collectors.
