Civil War Gwyn & Campbell carbine, .52 cal., 20” barrel, wood butt stock, #812 in overall good condition showing a grey patina on metal surfaces with scattered spots of erosion and old pitting around the firing areas; good action, good markings on lockplate with “UNION RIFLE” marked on right side of receiver; bore should clean to good; stock is overall good with no visible cartouches, some scattered old mars and dings from carry and storage and some age cracking at butt plate area and behind lockplate from dryness. Only approx. 8,200 of this Model were manufactured between 1863 and 1864, with limited commercial sales; several Union cavalry forces were known to be armed with Gwyn and Campbell carbines including the 7th Tennessee, 5th & 8th Ohio, 4th & 8th Missouri, 3rd Wisconsin and the 5th, 6th and 16th Illinois.
