General Philip H. Sheridan autograph letter signed. Datelined Chicago, 27 September 1879, letter is addressed to General Henry Martyn Cist. It reads in full, ''Immediately after the receipt of your note of 23rd I telegraphed to Genl [James A.] Garfield asking him to appoint a new orator and urging him to make every endeavor to induce a large attendance and successful meeting. I am like yourself in feeling that the Ohio Campaign will interfere with the work of the Committee. The Army of the Tennessee had also postponed their meeting here until the 12 & 13 of November, which leaves but a short time between the respective meetings. It has been suggested to postpone our meeting until the anniversary of [presumably the Battle of] Nashville, December on account of this and the Ohio Election; but I am of the opinion we should go on as to change might create confusion. With kind regards / Yours truly / P. H. Sheridan''. Letter runs 4pp., written in different directions on a single sheet of card-style stationery. Measures 5'' x 6.25''. Creasing, else near fine.
