This walking stick has a silver top engraved, "Manuf and presented by the Derby Silver Co. To Command No. 1 U.V.U. Shelton, Conn." It is a 33" long wood shaft, slightly bowed, one piece silver collar and top engraved with a floral scroll design all the way around. Tip intact. The Union Veterans Union (U.V.U.) was formed in Washington, D.C., in 1886 for Civil War veterans. They stayed active until around the 1920s, and slowly dissolved as the members passed away. In 1998 several descendants of Union veterans reactivated the association. The Derby Silver Company was founded in 1872, and began operations one year later. The company outgrew its quarters in 1877 and constructed a larger building, which still stands on Bridge Street, Shelton, overlooking Derby. The company made toilet articles, mirrors, combs, clocks, brushes, table and flatware, tea sets, children`s cups, loving cups (trophies), candlesticks, fruit baskets, dishes, basically anything which was plated by or made of silver.
