For your consideration is this Civil War Era prosthetic left leg. The leg is made of carved wood below the knee and has a foot with "toes" carved in to the wood. Metal hinges are at the knee and ankle, and it has a leather harness designed to be secured with laces above the knee. It measures 28.5 " long and is in good condition for its age. It has been estimated that there were 45,000 amputations performed during the Civil War. James Edward Hanger of the Confederate States Army, was reportedly the first amputee of the Civil War. Dissatisfied with the fit and function of his prosthesis, Hanger designed his own prosthesis in 1861. Palmer eventually was granted a patent for his innovation in 1891 and started his own prosthetic company that endures today.
