Civil War Era Letters
Civil War Era Letters. Two letters written in the shadow of the conflict of the American Civil War. The first, a three page letter, 5” x 8”, written by I. S. Dillingham of Brooklyn, dated July 24, 1861 on paper with a patriotic vignette of Washington on horseback captioned “Union”, is essentially a letter of condolence to a friend upon the loss of his wife. By means of cheering up the bereaved the writer mentions happier pursuits to lighten the mood: “We are having fine times here. Central Park, Greenwood, Barnums, etc. not escaping our notice.” The letter displays the usual fold creases, else is in fine condition. The second letter, one page, 4.5” x 7”, written by Anna Dickinson, Philadelphia, August 16, 1864, is a response to an invitation for some unknown occasion. With the usual fold creases, else very good. Ex. Henry E.
