Civil War Era Letters to Congressman Sam S. Cox
Civil War Era Archive of Letters to Ohio Congressman Samuel S. Cox. An interesting archive of thirteen letters, 4.75” x 7.75”, on patriotic letterhead, from various constituents, dating from 1861-63, ranging from very good to fine condition. This collection of letters to Congressman Cox run the gamut from serious to silly, the latter case illustrated by this missive, dated July 12, 1861, from a C. A. Wagner, which reads in part: “I could have told you before you Started for Washington about this poison they had in place of Whiskey. We Could not drink it when I was in Washington I had to contend myself with bad ale. The Whiskey I Send you today by Express I send to a frind sic to Cincinnati for it and it is Supposed that the article is Sound and the price high. You will accept the jug of Whiskey from one of your warm frinds sic at Columbus…”. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
