Civil War Era Letters and Flag Pin
Civil War Era Letters and Flag Pin. A lot comprised of three Civil War letters and a pin of crossed Confederate and U.S. flags. The metal pin, about an inch tall, has a pin soldered on the reverse, and depicts the U.S. and Confederate flags surmounted by an eagle. This pin is likely a post-war reunion item to commemorate the spirit of friendship between former foes.

One of the letters is written by a Union soldier serving under General Frederick Steele's near Helena, Arkansas. The letter, four pages, 4.75 x 7, dated September 7, 1862 is written to his sister Mattie Potter. In the letter Potter writes in part Gen. Curtis has been superceded in his command by Gen. Steele which gives general satisfaction among the troops. We are constantly menaced by guerrillas in small bands firing on our pickets and forage trains just enough to keep scouting lively but think we are not in danger of an attack in force. Potter then goes on to give his younger sister heartfelt advice on how to handle her affairs - try to cement the family union with bonds of love stronger than those of iron. Well do I remember that the happiest days I ever spent were those I spent at home. God grant I yet may live to return. The other letter from Potter, four pages, dated August 28, 1862, also sent from Helena, Arkansas is to his mother. In this letter he mentions that Gen. Curtis has not moved his army into the interior nor does he prove so efficient a commander as to hang guerrillas. The third letter is from Lucy Potter to her mother. Lucy Potter is presumably Edward's mother and in this letter she makes mention of him being attached to the 1st Division in the commissary department. All letters are legible and in very good condition.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
