Civil War Era European Flintlock Military Musket, Altered to Percussion, NVSN, .72 cal., 35.625" round barrel, brass blade front sight and notched iron rear sight on top tang; rounded lockplate is marked "Gibbsted" in tiny letters ahead of nipple bolster; brass furniture includes trigger guard with steel sling loop at front, buttplate having long top tang, 5.125" serpentine sideplate, nosecap and three ferrules retaining the steel button-tip ramrod. Fullstock of oil-finished walnut has large rectangular "OBIC" cartouche and 7" ovoid cheekrest at left side, step at lower thimble. Mfg'd ca. 1820s, altered ca. 1860s. Condition is about good, the steel surfaces are gunmetal gray with scattered light-to-moderate erosion and pitting/battering in breech area (obscuring any markings there), brass with moderate patina. Stock shows the effects of age and long military use, having scattered nicks and gouges, minor losses along barrel edges, a 3.5" repaired break at wrist, a 3.75" crack on right ahead of lock, a plugged thru-hole behind lower thimble and a 16.75" replaced forestock of non-matching wood. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows moderate-to-heavy black-powder erosion. Est.: $400-$650. (Antique)
