Civil War Era Currency: Civil War Patriotic Scrip Note, Will Pay to Uncle Sam, Town of Brattleboro
Civil War Patriotic Scrip Note, "Will Pay to Uncle Sam," Town of Brattleboro, VT, 10¢, Extremely Fine. The collecting field of Civil War change bills is broad, with perhaps 50,000 different notes or more likely to exist. Every town, hamlet and urban street corner seemed to be issuing notes in 1862 to alleviate the Civil War's hunger for hard money (mostly hidden away to hedge for the uncertain future). Few notes we have seen in 20 years of search and study have been as intriguing as this issue. This simple bill, less than three inches wide, will pay "Uncle Sam" or bearer, quite an early use for this term and the only one we can recall seeing on actual money. Dated Oct. 20, 1862 and redeemable at the Windham County Bank. That solid establishment issued banknotes and eventually became part of the National Banking system. For accuracy, we'll mention petty foxing at the upper right quadrant. Most of the known notes of this issue, with several issue dates, are in established New England collections and may not be available for years. This specimen was in a collection for two decades. An extraordinary crossover of collecting fields-a great piece of Civil War and American history.
