Here is a very interesting Ambrotype that has a wood case with embossed leather cover front to back. The inside cover is embossed velvet with the photo frame on the back half of the 2 piece frame. The inside frame border appears to be copper or some similar colored metal and is quite nice. It is set in a velvet lined rim in which the frame sits. I have to date this to the 1860 time period as that is when this photographic technique began to be replaced. There were many civil war images that have not survived as does here. I am unable to determine if it is Civil War or before. Could this be an imagage of an early African American Black Soldier. The black covering over the glass negative is wearing. The photo has some coloring which is typical for these. The case is in excellent condition with some expected wear. A wonderful early collectable for your consideration.
